Are you tired of trying to convince your colleagues – or even your board – to act on the climate crisis?
Sick of trying to install a sense of urgency into their actions? You’re not alone, I feel you.
Here’s how to shift the conversation:
✅ Step 1: Reframe the question. It’s not “Should we act?” but “Can we afford not to?”
✅ Step 2: Position adaptation and resilience as risk management and future-proofing.
✅ Step 3: Find a competitor who’s already acting — and turn their story into a case study. (Show them they will be left behind.)
✅ Step 4: Watch climate reporting and climate action move up the business priority list.
But here’s what I found is the real challenge: ACCESS to DECISION makers. If you’re not in the C-suite, how do you even get in the room with the people making the calls?
How to gain access and get results
Here are a few ways you can gain access inside your company:
- Build allies in departments like risk, finance, and operations — they speak the language decision makers listen to and they usually have BUDGETS.
- Link your climate proposal to an existing business goal (cost savings, compliance, innovation).
- Share credible resources internally and frame them as opportunities for specific individuals to stand out and take credit.
- Start a “green team” — there is power in numbers.
It’s frustrating that in 2025, getting some action on climate takes an intricate behavioural change and sneaky strategies to move the needle.
But that’s the reality for most businesses (in Australia at least) so if that’s what it takes, that’s what we need to do.
