Welcome to another episode of 🍩 Donut Waste Time, Save the Planet! 🌏
Today we talk about How to make sure you recycle right. 💁♀️
Now before we start I’d like to introduce you to a term called WISHcycling. You know how sometimes you’re not sure about which bin to put in or if it even belongs to your kerbside bin… but you really wish it was recycled. So you put it into the yellow bin because you really want it to be recycled. So this is something called wishcycling.
Please do not wish-cycle. Why? Because it is actually more expensive to remove the contamination from the yellow bin, rather than sending the wrong thing to landfill from time to time.
So how do you make sure that you recycle correctly and choose the right bin? Here are a few simple steps to follow:
♻️ 1) Check with your local council
Whether you live in Stirling, Bunbury, Busselton, Bayswater, please check with your council. There are few resources you can check. One of them is the paper waste guide. Most councils do send them to you each year so you can put them on your fridge.
Another way is to go on the council’s website and just search for ‘recycling.’
And lastly, if you’re old-fashioned, you can just give them a call and ask.
Why to check local recycling rules?
Because even though the resources and the way we recycle and sort our waste is becoming unified here in WA, there are still items that are being dealt with differently in each council.
Such as hazardous waste or e-waste – these are pretty much dealt with differently in each council.
So you have to make sure you don’t put these into your kerbside bin and take them to the desired place.
Some councils will offer an on-demand pick-up service. Some councils will send you to the recycling tip.
So make sure you know, what your council does with those things.
♻️ 2) Visit www.recycleright.wa.gov.au
RecycleRight website is a great online resource! It’s looked after by the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council so you rest assured information is correct.
You’ll be prompted to pick the bin solution you have at home – whether you have two bins, three bins, GO bin, FOGO bin.
The website then takes you to a page where you can input any item or material and it will literally spit it out for you and tells you which bin to put it into. Magic!
♻️ 3) Ask a reliable source
And lastly, what you can do to make sure you recycle correctly is to ask a reliable source.
And by that, I don’t mean talking to your grandpa. Unless grandpa works as a waste education officer. In that case, please do talk to your grandpa about rubbish.
Why ensure you have the right resource?
Because some rules are different in different states or even councils. So if you Google you might get web results related to Victoria or New South Wales and they do recycle differently. So make sure you’re asking the right person or source that knows the local rules and knows what to do in YOUR council.
And that’s it.
If you have any specific questions about specific items you’re unsure about how to recycle, please put them underneath this video and I will answer them next week.
